I mentally committed to this endeavor last November, but I didn't share the plan right away. I had to be sure that this was something I could do. 450 miles is not the farthest bike trip ever made - not by a long shot. Many people have ridden across our country every year, and some have even cycled around the world! That said it is still 450 miles!!
After I made the mental decision, I began to cycle all winter- weather permitting. This is something I hadn't done in 15 years, and even then it was sporadic. So my journey began. Most of my riding had been on my own - just because of my schedule. As the weather has warmed up, I have been riding more with others. My wife, Theresa has also joined in to keep me company. She met me near home when I have ridden to work, and we are taking trail rides together at least once a week.
So far this year, I have pedaled 1,513 miles out on the road, and added another 625 miles on an indoor bike when the weather hasn't cooperated. So all in all, 2,138 miles to date. In these final 34 days of training, I hope to add another 600 miles to make sure I am prepared.
For the last 6 weeks, I have been getting use to riding with the extra weight I will need to complete this ride. Currently I am up to an extra 35 lbs. of gear. I will start next week carrying my full weight of 40-45 pounds. It certainly does not make me look forward to long, steep climbs!
Well that's a glimpse. Now it's time for sleep, as I am meeting good friends Doug & Peggy for a 50 miler tomorrow morning at 6AM.
